HYDROGEN SUPPLY AGREEMENT WITH KIMBERLY-CLARK

Kimberly-Clark UK & Ireland and Carlton Power have signed an agreement for Carlton Power to supply 100GWh of green hydrogen to Kimberly-Clark’s manufacturing plant in Barrow-in-Furness, enabling Kimberly-Clark to further decarbonise its production of toilet and facial tissues by directly replacing fossil-fuel natural gas used for steam generation.

Kimberly-Clark, the manufacturer of leading household name brands including Andrex® and Kleenex®, becomes the first major consumer products company in the UK to make a significant commitment to green hydrogen, signalling its commitment to a more sustainable future.

Keith Clarke, Founder and Chief Executive of Carlton Power, said: “Kimberly-Clark’s commitment to using green hydrogen in its operations is a significant move and shows great ambition and leadership. Our development of the Barrow scheme has been forged through strong partnerships with Kimberly-Clark, our financial partner Schroders Greencoat and with the UK Government as well as with local agencies and stakeholders. Our Barrow Green Hydrogen facility will be the first in a series of projects that we will bring into commercial operation over the next 2-4 years to support UK industry make the transition to using green hydrogen and away from fossil fuels.”

Carlton Power has secured a long-term financial contract with the UK Government to support the project’s future operation. The contract (through the Government’s Hydrogen Business Model and Hydrogen Allocation Round 1), coupled with the supply agreement with Kimberly-Clark, are key milestones for Carlton Power and Schroders Greencoat to reach a Final Investment Decision for the Barrow project.

A FID is expected to be made before the end of the year, with construction to start thereafter.
